Get Healthy with Big Red!

The Dairy Council is helping to start future milk consumers on the right track with positive dairy and nutrition messaging. They have teamed up with Big Red the Cardinals mascot to do a nutrition and physical activity program called "Getting Healthy with Big Red". Fourteen lucky schools across the valley received a fun lesson from the Dairy Council and Big Red. The lessons are targeted to students Kindergarten through third grade.

Dairy Council representatives give the message which teaches children proper nutrition with emphasis on getting three servings of dairy a day, and to get 60 minutes of physical activity everyday. The students have lots of fun when Big Red comes in to do some fun activities to get them moving. The lessons last about 30 minutes and the Dairy Council leaves a 3-A-Day Frisbee, string cheese and an activity book to reinforce the messages. Teachers have responded with very positive comments that their students have been making healthier choices at lunch.

"Getting Healthy with Big Red" is hoping to expand next year and include more schools and students. If you are interested in "Getting Healthy with Big Red" at your school please contact Patricia Johnson RD, SNS by email: pjohnson@dcaz.org.
